AMA ads, reminder ads, Redditor Highlights and app ads
Four formats with their own rules: AMA ads promote an organic AMA post, reminder ads let people tap "Remind Me" before an event, Redditor Highlights add real community posts under an ad, and app ads use the standard image, video and carousel specs.
| Spec | Reddit's limit | Reddit recommends |
|---|---|---|
| AMA ads | Creative comes from the AMA post; title up to 300 characters; first image is the thumbnail (no crop); no custom CTA or URL; the button moves from "Remind Me" to "Join Now"; awareness or traffic; RSVP count shows once 11 or more people register | — |

Why one image can look different in two places: compact view and conversation pages show the thumbnail, not the main image.
Where Reddit ads appear, and what each placement shows
Reddit recommends automatic placements, and at least one placement is required. "Conversation ads" is a placement, not a separate format.
| Placement | What shows there | Formats |
|---|---|---|
| Feed, card view | Home, Popular and community feeds. Shows the main image, video or carousel. | Every ad type |
| Feed, compact view | The same feeds in the compact layout. Image and carousel ads show the 400 × 300 thumbnail instead of the main media; a click on a video opens the landing page. | Every ad type |
| Conversation | On comment pages, between the post and the first comment or further down the thread. Image ads show the thumbnail; carousels show every card. | Every ad type except interactive and collection ads and Redditor Highlights |
| Desktop right rail | Named only in Reddit's marketing comparison table, as optional for image ads; the Help Center does not list it. | Image ads |
| Takeover surfaces | First ad on Home and Popular, the desktop sidebar, the first conversation slot in a category, and the app's vertical video surface. | Premium, through Reddit sales |
What we make for a new Reddit test (our default, not Reddit's rule)
- Images: a 1440 × 1080 master under 3 MB, a 1080 × 1350 cut for mobile, and our own 400 × 300 thumbnail under 500 KB in which the message still reads, because compact view and conversation pages show only the thumbnail.
- Video: 5–30 seconds, 4:5 (1200 × 1500) for mobile and 4:3 or 16:9 for everything else, captions on, the brand inside the first three seconds, under 100 MB so the same file works in Max.
- Carousels: one ratio on every card, captions of 50 characters or fewer.
- Headlines: the point in the first 80 characters, plus three to five short variants for Max.
Reddit publishes no safe-zone dimensions; it advises checking every placement in the Ads Manager preview.
Most Reddit tests start from creative made for another platform. Here is what carries over, judged only against Reddit's own ratios.
Reusing Meta, LinkedIn and TikTok creative on Reddit

Why spec pages around the web give different numbers: Reddit's own pages do.
Where Reddit's own pages disagree, and which value to plan for
Reddit's Help Center, its marketing comparison table and its Learning Hub give different values for the same spec. The tables above follow the Help Center's spec articles. Here are both values with their pages, and the one we plan for.
| Spec | One Reddit page says | Another says | Plan for (our advice) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image file size | 3 MB (Image ad specifications) | 20 MB (Ad types comparison table) | Keep image files under 3 MB. |
| Recommended image size | 4:3 · 1440 × 1080 px (Image ad specifications) | 1:1 or 16:9 · 1200 × 628 px and up (Ad types comparison table) | Make 1440 × 1080 first; add 1080 × 1350 for mobile-heavy tests. |
| Animated GIFs | Converted to still images (Image ad specs guide (Learning Hub)) | 3–10 second GIFs recommended for carousel cards (Carousel ad specifications) | Expect a GIF to show as a still; use video for motion. Takeovers do not take animated GIFs. |
| Video length | 5–30 seconds recommended (Video ad specifications) | Under 10 seconds (video ads page); 60 seconds or less (comparison table) (Video ads page) | The limit is 2 seconds to 15 minutes. Start with 5–30 seconds and a 6–10 second cut. |
| Thumbnail file size | Up to 3 MB (Image ad specifications) | Under 500 KB (Image ad specs guide (Learning Hub)) | Keep thumbnails under 500 KB, the takeover limit too. |
| Headline length advice | 100 characters or fewer (80 to be safe) (Image, video and carousel specs) | 150 characters or fewer (Creative best practices) | Say it in the first 80 characters; in Max write 50 or fewer. |
| Ad review time | Typically within one day (Ad review process) | Up to 48 business hours (Set up a campaign) | Allow two business days before launch. |
| Lead gen form | A form on your website (About lead generation ads) | A pop-up form on Reddit (Reddit lead gen ads) | Both exist since 6 October 2026; choose in Ads Manager and test the form in preview. |
| Text-only "Text/Link" ads | Listed as a format (What are Reddit Ads formats? (Learning Hub)) | Not a format; image, video, carousel, free-form, interactive (Ad unit specifications) | For a text-led ad, use free-form. |

Reddit ad targeting options
- Interest
- Topics people recently interacted with, on the IAB standard.
- Community
- Communities people subscribed to, viewed or visited in the last 28 days. Reddit suggests at least 15 per ad group.
- Keyword
- Posts and conversations containing your keywords, in six languages; lists of up to 2,000 lines.
- Automated targeting
- On by default: your choices become suggestions, while location, device, carrier and language stay fixed.
- Custom audiences
- Website visitors from the Pixel or Conversions API (1–90-day lookback), customer lists (1,000 to 1 million matches), lookalikes (from 10,000 visitors or 1,000 matched customers) and people who engaged with your ads in the past six months.
- Location
- Country, region, US DMA, and up to 20,000 postal codes per ad group.
- Demographics
- Gender (beta) and 21 languages. The Help Center lists no age targeting.
- Device
- Device, carrier and, for app campaigns, OS version.
- Schedule
- Hours and days of the week.
- In-market audiences (beta)
- Through Max campaigns, for example Enterprise and Business AI or Cybersecurity.
Sensitive categories (health, politics, religion, sexual orientation and others) cannot be targeted, and some communities are never open to ads. Community targeting reaches people by the communities they read; it is not a placement inside that community.

Sources, and how this page stays current
Every value on this page comes from Reddit's own pages: the Reddit Ads Help Center, business.reddit.com and Reddit's newsroom. We read them on and check them again every quarter; the next check is in January 2027. Where Reddit's pages disagree, the tables follow the Help Center's spec articles. Recommendations marked as ours are our advice, not Reddit's rules.
Reddit ad specs FAQ
What size should a Reddit ad image be?
Reddit recommends 1440 × 1080 px (4:3) as the one image for every device. On mobile it also recommends 1080 × 1080 (1:1), 1080 × 1440 (3:4), 1080 × 1350 (4:5) and 1920 × 1080 (16:9). Image ads take JPG, PNG or GIF files up to 3 MB. Any ratio is accepted, but other ratios may be letterboxed.
What are the Reddit video ad specs?
MP4 or MOV (no ProRes), up to 1 GB, 2 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 30 fps. Reddit recommends 5–30 seconds and 4:3 (1440 × 1080) or 16:9 (1920 × 1080) for every device, with 1:1, 3:4 and 4:5 on mobile. In Max campaigns the file limit is 100 MB.
How long can a Reddit ad headline be?
Up to 300 characters on every format. Reddit recommends 100 or fewer and puts the safe limit at 80, because longer headlines get cut on some devices. Max campaigns ask for headlines of 50 characters or fewer, and a Category Takeover conversation ad cuts its headline after 145.
Does Reddit support 9:16 vertical video ads?
Not in standard auction ads: 9:16 is not among Reddit's recommended or accepted video ratios, and its guide for moving TikTok ads to Reddit says to resize them to 4:3 or 16:9. Vertical 9:16 is used in premium placements sold by Reddit's sales team: Video Spotlight and the desktop takeover sidebar.
What is the difference between a Reddit ad format and a placement?
The format is what you build: image, video, carousel, free-form or interactive. The placement is where it shows: the feed (Home, Popular and community feeds) or the conversation placement on comment pages. "Conversation ads" are a placement, not a format; every format except interactive and collection ads can run there.
What is the ideal size for a Reddit banner ad?
Self-serve Reddit Ads have no banner format. The banner-like slot is the desktop sidebar in a Reddit Takeover or Category Takeover, sold only through Reddit's sales team: JPG or PNG up to 150 KB, 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) above the fold and 1080 × 1080 (1:1) below it. A subreddit's banner is the community's header image, not an ad.
How do I buy a Reddit Takeover?
Through Reddit's sales team only. Takeovers are reserved for managed advertisers on a CPM model, and managed sales asks for a commitment of $10,000 or more a quarter (or an advertiser in a sensitive category). Reddit does not publish takeover prices.
