AI Visibility for Contractors and Construction Companies
Verticality gets contractors and construction companies named when homeowners ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity who to hire. When we asked ChatGPT eight homeowner questions, such as who the best kitchen remodelers in Los Angeles are, it named five or six local companies in seven answers. The sources it checked were state license boards, Houzz, local “best of” lists and contractors’ own websites; Reddit was cited in none. We work on those sources: your license and service facts, your directory profiles, the lists AI reads and your own pages, and we track every day which answers name you.

How homeowners choose a contractor now
Homeowners ask for names: “Who are the best ADU builders in Orange County?” ChatGPT answers with a short list of local companies and a line on each, and it tells the homeowner to check the license. It builds that list from a small set of sources. On Google the same searches are answered by the map pack and directories, and Reddit hardly shows up.
-
01 · Shortlist
“Which ADU builders in Orange County have good reviews?”
A named list of five or six local contractors, built from directories, local “best of” lists and contractors’ own pages.
-
02 · Check
“How do I find a trustworthy general contractor for a home addition?”
A checklist: active license, classification, insurance, bond, complaints, with a link to the state license board.
-
03 · Compare
“How much does an ADU cost in California?”
On Google: cost guides and, for a few questions like this one, a Reddit thread from r/homeowners or a local subreddit.
Where homeowners talk about contractors on Reddit, and what you may post there
Reddit matters less for contractors than for most industries, and its home communities are closed to businesses. r/homeowners forbids posts and comments from business-owned accounts; r/FirstTimeHomeBuyer bars industry professionals without moderator approval. What stays open is expertise without promotion.

What gets a contractor named by AI
01
License facts in plain text
License number, classification, bond and insurance on your site and every profile. ChatGPT sent homeowners to the license board in 5 of 8 answers; give it something to match.
02
Complete directory profiles
Houzz was cited in 3 of 8 answers, and Angi, BuildZoom and ConsumerAffairs appeared too. Project photos, service area and specialties, the same on every profile.
03
The local lists AI reads
Local “best of” lists and review roundups were cited in 3 of 8 answers. Getting onto them is part of the work, starting with the ones cited for your services.
04
A page per service with real projects
ChatGPT gives each contractor a line on what it does best. A page that states project types, the cities you serve, typical scope and timeline is where that line comes from.
Rules contractors work within
| License number in ads | California requires a contractor’s CSLB license number in all advertising (Business and Professions Code §7030.5), and several states have similar rules. We put it on every page and profile we touch. |
|---|---|
| Reviews | The FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since October 2024, bans fake reviews and buying them. We ask real customers for reviews; we never write them. |
| r/homeowners forbids business-owned accounts, and r/Roofing removes posts that name a company. We do not post there for you. | |
| Claims | No “best in [city]”, “licensed and insured” or price claim that your documents do not back. |
What AI cites when homeowners ask for a contractor
We asked ChatGPT, with web search, eight questions homeowners ask in Los Angeles, Orange County, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas and Austin. It cited one to six sources per answer, from a short list of kinds.
The list ChatGPT gives is short and specific. A contractor who is not in the sources it reads is not on the list, however good the work. Google is different again: for 67 contractor keywords it showed an AI Overview on 37% of searches and answered the rest with the map pack and directories such as Houzz and Yelp. We track your questions in all three engines every day, so the work follows the engine your homeowners use.
What ChatGPT cited, of 8 answers
- State license boards (CSLB, Arizona ROC) 5
- Houzz 3
- Local “best of” lists 3
- Angi, BuildZoom, ConsumerAffairs 2
- Contractors’ own websites 1
- City and county consumer pages 1
- Reddit 0

The first 90 days for a contractor
-
Month 1
Map and baseline
Your homeowners’ questions per service and city in the tracker, a baseline report by day 10 and a ranked plan by day 15; an audit of your license, service-area and project facts across your site and every directory profile.
-
Month 2
Fix and place
Service pages rewritten with real projects, cities and scope; profiles on Houzz, Angi, BuildZoom and the BBB completed and aligned; requests to the local lists the answers cite; a review request routine for finished jobs.
-
Month 3
Measure and move the budget
Your mention rate per engine and per city, the sources that started citing you, calls and form leads from AI referrals. What does not move gets dropped.
Mistakes contractors make with AI search
No license number on the site
ChatGPT sent homeowners to the license board in 5 of 8 answers, and California requires the number in advertising anyway.
Profiles that disagree
A different business name, phone or service area on Houzz, Angi and your site leaves AI two companies to choose from, or none.
One page for every service
A single “Services” page gives AI nothing to say about what you do best. Kitchens, additions and ADUs each need their own page with projects.
Buying or writing reviews
The FTC rule in force since October 2024 bans both, and a review profile that looks bought loses the trust it was meant to build.
Promoting yourself on r/homeowners
Business-owned accounts are forbidden there, and r/Roofing removes any post that names a company.
Expecting Reddit to rank
A Reddit thread reached Google’s first page for 3 of 67 contractor keywords. The budget belongs where homeowners are answered: AI, the map pack and directories.
What we can show today
We have no published AI visibility case for a contractor yet. What we have is the measurement on this page and the search work for two Los Angeles remodeling and ADU contractors whose keywords it uses. The first contractor programme we run will be published here with its numbers, the tool behind them and the dates.
AI visibility for contractors: FAQ
Can you get my construction company recommended by ChatGPT?
No agency can guarantee it. In our check ChatGPT named five or six local contractors in 7 of 8 homeowner questions, built from license boards, Houzz, local lists and contractors’ own sites. We track your questions every day, find the sources behind each answer and work on getting you into them. First signals usually show in 2–6 weeks.
What does ChatGPT use to pick contractors?
In our check of eight homeowner questions it cited state license boards in 5 answers, Houzz in 3, local “best of” lists in 3, and Angi, BuildZoom or ConsumerAffairs in 2. It cited Reddit in none.
Should contractors do Reddit marketing?
Mostly no. A Reddit thread reached Google’s first page for 3 of 67 contractor keywords, and r/homeowners forbids posts from business-owned accounts. Where a thread already ranks for your service, an answer from a working professional without promotion can help; that is the exception.
How is AI visibility different from local SEO?
Local SEO wins the map pack and Google rankings; AI visibility gets you named in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity answers. The sources overlap — profiles, reviews, license and service facts — so we run them together.
How much does AI visibility for a contractor cost?
AI visibility (GEO) programmes from $2,500 to $7,500 a month, month-to-month with no minimum term. The audit that sets the scope is free.
How long until results?
A baseline report by day 10 and a ranked plan by day 15. First signals, such as a first mention in a ChatGPT answer for your city, take 2–6 weeks; the work compounds by month 3–6.
