AI Visibility & Reddit Marketing for E-commerce Brands

Verticality gets e-commerce and DTC brands recommended when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity what to buy, and into the Reddit threads those answers read. For 43 home and garden product keywords, a Reddit thread was on Google’s first page for 70% of them, and half of the AI Overviews that listed sources cited Reddit. For 100 product questions we track for an online retailer, AI answers cited big-box retailers’ product pages first: Home Depot in 37% of 6,300 answers. We work on both: the threads that rank and the sources each AI engine reads.

of AI Overviews with listed sources cited Reddit (17 of 34)
37%
of 6,300 AI answers to a retailer’s product questions cited Home Depot

Where shoppers decide now

A shopper choosing a raised garden bed, a pan or a serum searches the product with “reddit” or “review”, or asks an AI assistant to choose. Both answers draw on the same places: Reddit threads where owners say what lasted, retailers’ product pages, review sites and videos. The brand that is in those places gets named.

  1. 01 · Search

“best raised garden bed kit” · “is it worth it reddit”

Google’s first page, with a Reddit thread on it for 70% of the home and garden keywords we checked.

  2. 02 · Ask

“Which raised bed kits hold up best?”

An AI answer that names a few products, citing big-box product pages, YouTube and review sites such as Bob Vila and The Spruce.

  3. 03 · Verify

    “Does it last?”

Owners’ threads: r/BuyItForLife, with 4.0 million members, exists for exactly this question.

What works for e-commerce brands on Reddit and in AI answers

01

Product facts in plain text

Sizes, materials, price, shipping and warranty as text on the product page, not inside images. AI shopping answers name a few products and lift the facts that decide between them.

02

Answers in “does it last” threads

An honest answer in the thread that ranks, with the trade-offs and the competitors, does more than a launch post. r/BuyItForLife asks for the brand and years owned.

03

Labelled promotion where it is allowed

r/NativePlantGardening allows promotional posts with the “Promotional Content” flair; r/homestead allows related blog links. Elsewhere, no promotion at all.

04

Your listings on the retailers AI cites

Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Wayfair and Amazon product pages were among the most-cited sources for a retailer’s product questions. A complete listing there is part of AI visibility.

Rules e-commerce brands work within

Rules e-commerce brands work within
Reviews The FTC rule on consumer reviews, in force since October 2024, bans fake reviews, buying reviews and suppressing negative ones.
Endorsements Under the FTC Endorsement Guides, free product, payment or affiliate income behind a recommendation is disclosed with it.
Green claims Environmental claims follow the FTC Green Guides; r/ZeroWaste and r/sustainability remove greenwashing.
Links r/Frugal, r/lawncare and r/castiron ban affiliate links; r/ZeroWaste bans Amazon links. We post none.

What AI cites when shoppers ask what to buy

For the 100 product questions we track every day for an online home and garden retailer, ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity gave 6,300 answers in October. The sources they cited most were retailers’ product pages, then videos, review sites and Reddit; the retailer’s own site was cited in 15% of answers.

The same retailer is named in 27% of ChatGPT answers, 11% of AI Overviews and 10% of Perplexity answers to the same questions. Three engines, three source sets: the work is per engine. Product facts on your own pages for ChatGPT, retailer listings and review coverage for AI Overviews, threads and roundups for Perplexity.

The first 90 days for a e-commerce brand

  1. Month 1

    Map and baseline

Your shoppers’ product questions per category in the tracker, a baseline report by day 10 and a ranked plan by day 15; a product-page facts audit; the threads ranking for your top product keywords. The first answers go live 14–20 days after the start.

  2. Month 2

    Fix, answer, place

Top product pages rewritten with extractable facts; answers in the threads that rank; pitches to the review sites and roundups the answers cite; your listings on the large retailers checked against your own pages.

  3. Month 3

    Measure and move the budget

Your mention rate per engine and per product line, Google positions of every thread we touched, AI and Reddit referral sessions and orders. What does not move gets dropped.

Mistakes e-commerce brands make with Reddit and AI

Posting from the brand account

r/SkincareAddiction forbids posts from brand-affiliated accounts at all, and most product communities remove anything that reads as an advert.

Dropping Amazon or affiliate links

r/ZeroWaste prohibits Amazon links; r/Frugal, r/lawncare, r/castiron and r/BackYardChickens ban affiliate links.

Greenwashing

r/ZeroWaste and r/sustainability remove sustainability claims made for promotion, and the FTC Green Guides apply to the same claims on your site.

Product facts only in images

AI reads text. Dimensions, materials and warranty inside a banner image are invisible to the answer that compares you with a competitor.

Ignoring the retailer listings

For a retailer’s product questions, Home Depot was cited in 37% of AI answers and its own site in 15%. An incomplete listing on a large retailer is a missing source.

Optimising for one engine

The same retailer is named in 27% of ChatGPT answers and 11% of AI Overviews. A plan built for ChatGPT alone leaves most of Google’s answers to others.

What we can show today

We have no published AI visibility case for an e-commerce brand yet. The numbers on this page come from the online home and garden retailer we work with, published without its name: its keywords on Google, and the 100 product questions we track for it every day. The first e-commerce programme we can publish will appear here with its numbers, the tool behind them and the dates.

E-commerce AI visibility and Reddit FAQ

Can you get our products recommended by ChatGPT?

No agency can guarantee it. We track your shoppers’ product questions in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Perplexity every day, find the pages each answer cites — retailer listings, review sites, videos, Reddit threads — and work on getting your products into them. First signals usually show in 2–6 weeks.

Does Reddit matter for e-commerce brands?

In home and garden it does: a Reddit thread was on Google’s first page for 70% of the product keywords we checked, and half of the AI Overviews with listed sources cited Reddit. Check your own category before you budget for it; the free audit does that.

Can a brand promote its products on Reddit?

Rarely, and only by the rules. r/SkincareAddiction forbids brand-affiliated accounts, r/gardening and r/Cooking ban advertising; r/NativePlantGardening allows labelled promotion and r/BuyItForLife disclosed affiliation. We read the rules of every community before the first post.

How is this different from e-commerce SEO?

E-commerce SEO ranks your own product and category pages on Google. AI visibility gets your products named in AI answers, which cite retailers, review sites, videos and Reddit as much as your site. The two share product-page work, so we run them together.

How much does it cost?

Reddit programmes from $1,900 to $5,000 a month, and AI visibility (GEO) programmes from $2,500 to $7,500 a month, month-to-month with no minimum term. Single posts and comments are also sold on their own, from $50 a comment, with a $1,500 minimum order a month.

How long until results?

A baseline report by day 10, the first Reddit answers live 14–20 days after the start. First signals take 2–6 weeks in AI answers and 4–8 weeks on Reddit; the work compounds by month 3–6.
