What Reddit marketing actually is

Reddit marketing is the practice of earning a brand a genuine, visible place in the Reddit communities where its buyers already discuss the category — through disclosed participation that follows each community's rules, rather than advertising dressed up as conversation. Done properly it produces threads that rank in Google and that AI assistants quote when someone asks which product or agency to choose.

That last part is what changed, and it raises an awkward question for any brand paying for content: when your buyer asks an AI assistant which product to choose, where does the answer actually come from? We spent a month measuring it. The next section is the answer, and it is the reason this service exists in the shape it does.

Our own measurement · 3 September 2026

Where AI answers actually come from

We put 150 real buying questions to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and classified every source they cited — 450 answers, 5,364 citations. Not to prove Reddit matters. To find out what a brand can and cannot influence.

Three findings came out of it, and together they explain why this service is shaped the way it is.

Finding 1

Your website is about one citation in seven

Everything an AI assistant says about your category is assembled from somewhere. Here is where, across all 150 questions. The line that matters is the second one — it includes every service page, landing page and homepage in the category, yours among them.

Source types cited by AI engines across 150 buying questions
Other people’s articles and lists roundups, guides and editorial on sites you do not control 55.8%
Vendor and agency websites every service page, landing page and homepage in the category — including yours 15.6%
Reddit threads live discussions quoted directly 11.3%
Platform documentation help centres and official product pages 10.5%
Directories and social Clutch, LinkedIn, YouTube 6.7%

What follows from it: you can write the best page in your category and still be missing from six of every seven sources the answer is built from. The budget most brands spend entirely on their own site has to be split — some of it has to go where the other six sevenths live.

Finding 2

Only one engine reads your website seriously

The same questions, the same day, split by engine. They do not behave alike, and that difference is the reason the work has three separate parts rather than one.

ChatGPT

1,317 citations
  • Other people’s articles and lists 34%
  • Platform documentation 31.4%
  • Your own website 25.9%
  • Reddit threads 8.4%

The one engine where your website genuinely counts. It reads your positioning sentence, your industries and your price, and repeats them almost verbatim.

Google AI Overviews

1,122 citations
  • Other people’s articles and lists 59.1%
  • Directories and social 15.5%
  • Reddit threads 11.7%
  • Your own website 10.4%

Decided almost entirely off your site. Nine citations in ten come from someone else’s page — a roundup, a directory, or a Reddit thread.

Perplexity

2,925 citations
  • Other people’s articles and lists 64.4%
  • Your own website 13%
  • Reddit threads 12.5%
  • Directories and social 6.2%

The most reliant on third parties of the three, and the most willing to quote a live Reddit thread as the deciding source.

What follows from it: the page you are reading is aimed at ChatGPT, because that is the one engine where a well-built website earns a quarter of the citations. Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity have to be won somewhere else entirely — in the threads and in other people's roundups. Same brand, three different jobs.

Finding 3

Two Reddit threads can decide an entire answer

Averages hide how concentrated this gets. Below is a single AI Overview taken apart — the nine sources Google used, in the order it used them. We ran this on our own category so we could publish it without exposing a client's.

Query: “reddit marketing agency” · Google AI Overview · 3 September 2026

  1. 1 A thread in r/digital_marketing asking for agency recommendations
  2. 2 A second r/digital_marketing thread on the same question
  3. 3 An agency’s own service page
  4. 4 An agency homepage
  5. 5 A Clutch directory category
  6. 6 A “best agencies” roundup
  7. 7 A second agency service page
  8. 8 A second roundup
  9. 9 A third roundup, on a competitor’s blog

What follows from it: Two Reddit threads and four roundups. Three of the nine sources were company websites — and none of them was the brand the buyer ended up considering.

And when the question is about a Reddit-shaped purchase

Narrowing the same run to the 74 questions where buyers are choosing tools, services or vendors in public, Reddit's share nearly doubles — and your website does not move.

Method. 150 buying questions asked of ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity on 3 September 2026; 450 answers and 5,364 citations classified by source type. Market: United States, English. The Reddit cut is 74 of those questions (2,571 citations). Limitations: one collection run on one day. AI answers vary between runs and these shares move by a few points either way — read them as the shape of the problem, not a scoreboard. The questions were drawn from our own market, because it is the one we can publish; we run the identical method on a client's market in month one.

Why this is happening now

19.1%

of everything AI engines cited, when the question was a buyer choosing a tool or a vendor in public, came straight out of Reddit threads. Across all 150 questions the figure is 11.3% — Reddit’s share almost doubles exactly where purchases get decided.

No ratio

Reddit has no site-wide self-promotion ratio. Rule 2 asks you to “abide by community rules” and “participate authentically”, and leaves the specifics to each subreddit — which is exactly why brands get removed. The widely repeated “one post in ten” was retired years ago; it survives only as an explicit rule in a minority of communities.

Reddit Rules, Rule 2 · checked 3 September 2026

$60M/yr

is what Google has reportedly been paying Reddit for access to its content since 2024 — and as of July 2026 that deal is up for renewal, with Reddit publicly weighing whether to restrict Google’s access instead. Whichever way it lands, the price tag is the point: this is the one content source the engines pay for.

Who this works for

B2B SaaS

Buyers compare tools in public in r/SaaS, r/b2bmarketing and vertical communities, and those threads rank for your category terms.

DTC and e-commerce

Product recommendations in niche communities carry more weight than any ad, and they persist for years.

Fintech and regulated

Slower and tighter, but the reputational upside is larger precisely because competitors avoid the risk.

Developer tools

Technical communities are unusually well-indexed and unusually intolerant of marketing. Done right, that asymmetry is yours.

Who it does not

  • Brands looking for leads this month. This is a compounding channel, not a performance one.
  • Categories with no active community. We will tell you in the audit rather than invent one.
  • Anyone who wants their competitors attacked, or reviews written by people who never used the product.
  • Teams that cannot give us one subject-matter expert for an hour a fortnight. Without that, the posts read like marketing, and Reddit notices.

We would rather say no in the audit than take a retainer for a channel that cannot work for you.

What's included

Every engagement contains all of this. Reddit Ads are the one optional line.

01

Prompt and thread research

We build the list of questions your buyers ask AI assistants and search engines, then find every Reddit thread the engines already cite for them. That list is the work plan — and it is yours from week one.

02

Subreddit mapping

Which communities decide your category, what each one allows, who moderates it, and what gets a post removed. Ranked by how many of your buying questions each community influences.

03

Expert-led posts and comments

Real contributions written by someone who understands your product, posted inside each community’s rules. Answers to live questions first; original posts only where the community wants them.

04

Brand-mention monitoring

Every mention of your brand, your competitors and your category across Reddit, with sentiment and the threads worth answering this week.

05

Reddit SEO

Threads that rank in Google for your buying keywords, and a plan for the negative ones that already do. Reddit results appear in Google’s Discussions and Forums block — those positions are winnable.

06

AI citation tracking

Your mention rate and share of voice inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, measured against the five agencies or vendors you actually compete with. Collected daily, read weekly.

07

Reddit Ads

Optional. Subreddit, interest and keyword targeting, managed for a flat fee — we never take a percentage of your ad spend.

How we work

Three phases. We state the timeline ourselves so you can hold us to it.

  1. Month 1–2

    Foundation

Prompt set built and baselined. Subreddit map delivered. Accounts established and contributing. First answers posted in the threads that already decide your category.

    Baseline report in week 2

  2. Month 2–4

    Activation

Consistent participation across the mapped communities. Original posts where they are welcome. Negative or outdated threads addressed. Reddit Ads layered on if you want reach faster.

First citation movement, typically weeks 4–8

  3. Month 4 onward

    Compound

Threads accumulate, rank in Google, and get picked up by the engines. Third-party lists start including you. Reporting shifts from activity to share of voice.

    Compounding by month 3–6

Our ban-safe policy

Every agency says “no bots”. Here is the actual policy, in full, so you can hold us to it — and a self-check so you can see where your own account stands before you talk to anyone.

Accounts
Real, aged accounts belonging to real people. Never purchased, never automated, never rented. Your own team's accounts stay yours.
Disclosure
Anyone recommending you says who they work for, in the comment itself. Undisclosed affiliation is what gets brands called out and removed.
Community rules
There is no site-wide ratio to comply with — Reddit's Rule 2 defers to each community. So we read every subreddit's rules and wiki before the first post, and treat the strictest one as the standard.
Moderators
Where a community expects brands to ask first, we ask first. If a moderator says no, the answer is no.
Votes and comments
Never bought, never traded, never solicited from staff. This is the line that ends in site-wide bans, and we do not go near it.
If something goes wrong
We tell you the same week, explain what triggered it, and fix it with the moderators — we do not quietly spin up replacement accounts.

Ban-risk self-check

Eight questions about how your brand posts today. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How we choose the communities

“We’ll research subreddits” is what every agency says and it means nothing. These are the five things we actually rank them on, in order of weight. The first one is the one almost nobody produces.

  1. 01Buying-question influence

How many of the questions your buyers actually ask are decided in this community. This is the ranking that matters and the one almost nobody produces.

  2. 02Citation frequency

How often AI engines quote threads from it. Some mid-sized communities are quoted far more than their size suggests.

  3. 03Promotion policy

What the rules literally permit — links, disclosed affiliation, self-posts only, or nothing at all.

  4. 04Moderator posture

How the mod team has treated brands recently. Read from removed posts and mod comments, not from the sidebar.

  5. 05Audience match

Whether the people there are the people who buy, or merely people interested in the topic.

If you already tried Reddit and it went badly

Most brands arrive here having tried once. It usually failed in one of four specific ways, and none of them mean Reddit does not work for you.

“The post was removed within an hour”

You posted into a community whose rules forbid links, or forbid promotion outright, or require a flair you did not set. Roughly a fifth of the subreddits where founders try to post ban self-promotion in any form.

What to do: Read the sidebar, the wiki and the last week of removed posts before writing anything. Where the rule is unclear, message the moderators and ask — most answer.

“Nobody replied, and the post got two upvotes”

The post read like marketing. Reddit is unusually good at detecting the shape of a press release, and an account with no history posting about its own product is the clearest possible signal.

What to do: Answer questions other people are already asking before you post anything of your own. The first contribution that gets traction is almost never about your product.

“It worked once, then everything stopped appearing”

A filter caught the account — automod thresholds on karma or age, or a site-wide flag after the same link appeared in several communities. You can usually still see your own posts, which is why this goes unnoticed for weeks.

What to do: Check each account logged out. If posts are invisible, stop posting from it and work with the moderators rather than creating a replacement, which is ban evasion and makes it worse.

“You got traction, and it did not turn into anything”

The threads that got attention were not the threads your buyers read before purchasing. Volume in a large general community is worth less than one answer in the small one where your category is decided.

What to do: Pick communities by how many real buying questions they influence, not by subscriber count. That ranking is the first thing we produce.

The problem. Competitors were being recommended by name in r/devops and r/sysadmin threads that ranked on page one for the category. The brand appeared in none of them, and two attempts to post from a company account had been removed as spam.

What we did. Mapped 9 communities, established four contributor accounts with disclosed affiliation, and answered live infrastructure questions rather than posting launches. Two engineers gave 45 minutes a fortnight for technical review.

Result. Mention rate across ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews went from 0% to 34% of tracked questions. Three answered threads now rank in the top five for category terms. No removals after the first month.

The problem. A US launch with no community presence, in a category where buyers ask for recommendations in r/SkincareAddiction and r/30PlusSkinCare before they buy anything.

What we did. Identified the recurring recommendation threads for the ingredient category, contributed through the founder account with disclosed affiliation, and answered formulation questions for eleven weeks before the product was mentioned once.

Result. By launch, the brand was named organically in four recurring recommendation threads and cited by Perplexity for two category questions. Reddit Ads were layered on in month four for launch reach.

What we will and will not claim

Reddit work is unusually hard to evidence in public, and the industry fills that gap with numbers nobody can check. Here is our rule.

We publish

  • Numbers from our own tracking, with the collection date and the method attached.
  • Live thread links, where the client has agreed to be named.
  • The measurement method itself, in enough detail that you could run it yourself.

We don’t

  • Client logos we do not have written permission to use.
  • Revenue figures we cannot trace to a specific engagement.
  • Testimonials that were not written by the person named.
  • Screenshots of threads we did not work on.

The two case studies above are marked as examples: they show the shape and the metrics we report, using illustrative figures, while the real ones clear client approval. We would rather label that than quietly publish something unverifiable.

Agency, freelancer, or someone in your team?

This is the comparison you are actually making, so here it is honestly — including the cases where hiring us is the wrong call.

Do it in-house

A full-time community manager, roughly $60–80k a year plus overhead in the US

Works because
Deepest product knowledge, and the accounts and relationships stay entirely yours.
Breaks because
One person cannot cover a dozen communities, and the first six weeks are spent learning which rules apply where — usually by getting removed.

Pick this if: You have one clear community, an existing presence in it, and someone who already posts there as themselves.

Hire a freelancer

Typically $500–2,000 a month

Works because
Cheap, flexible, and fine for steady participation once someone else has decided where and how.
Breaks because
You are buying hands, not judgment. No community map, no measurement, and the ban risk sits with you.

Pick this if: You already know your communities and your rules, and you only need volume.

Hire an agency

The market runs $1,900–$15,000 a month; ours runs $1,900–$5,000

Works because
You get the community map, the rules research, the measurement and the accountability — and someone else carries the ban risk.
Breaks because
It costs more than a freelancer, and a bad one will do more damage on Reddit than in any other channel.

Pick this if: You are in a contested category, you need it measured, and a removal or a public call-out would be expensive.

How we measure it

The research on this page is not a one-off marketing exercise — it is the same method we run for every client, every month. Six steps.

  1. 01

    Cohort

We find who the engines already recommend in your category, by counting mentions — not by picking whoever looks biggest.

  2. 02

    Keyword pool

Every phrase that whole cohort ranks for, merged. Relevance is how many of them rank for it, not raw volume.

  3. 03

    Clusters

The pool grouped into the themes your market genuinely argues about.

  4. 04

    Intent types

Six ways a buyer phrases a question — shortlists, comparisons, briefs, problems, education, industry.

  5. 05

    Matrix

Cluster × intent, weighted. The matrix decides how many questions to track, so the set is not cherry-picked.

  6. 06

    Prompt set

100–150 questions a real buyer would type. Collected daily, read weekly. None of them names you — so a mention has to be earned.

What lands in your report

  • Mention rate

How often you are named at all, per engine.

  • Share of voice

Your share against the five competitors you actually lose deals to.

  • Citation map

The exact pages and threads to be present in, ranked by questions affected.

What we don't promise

  • A number one position in ChatGPT, or any guaranteed AI citation. Nobody controls that, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing with your money.
  • A fixed number of upvotes, positive comments or “brand advocates”. Those come from vendors who buy them, and they end in bans.
  • Results in the first month. Reddit rewards consistency; the compounding starts around month three.
  • That Reddit is right for you. If your buyers are not on it, the audit will say so and we will not take the engagement.

Six questions to ask any Reddit agency

Including us. Reddit is the one channel where hiring badly does active damage rather than just wasting money, and the difference between a specialist and someone reselling a freelancer shows up in about four minutes if you ask the right things. Take this list to every call you have.

  1. 01

Can I read three comments you have actually posted for a client?

Why it works: Real published comments, with links. If an agency cannot show you the work in the place the work happens, there is nothing to evaluate.

  2. 02

Whose accounts will post, and do they say who they work for?

Why it works: The two defensible answers are “your team’s accounts” and “our named contributors, disclosing the client relationship”. Anonymous accounts posing as customers is the answer that ends in a public call-out.

  3. 03

    Which communities, and why those?

Why it works: A specialist has a ranked list and a reason for the order. “We’ll research subreddits” means the research has not been done.

  4. 04

What does your monthly report measure?

Why it works: If it counts posts, it is measuring effort. Ask for mention rate, share of voice against named competitors, threads ranking in search, and sentiment.

  5. 05

What is your policy when a moderator removes something?

Why it works: The right answer involves talking to the moderator. The wrong answer involves a new account.

  6. 06

What will you refuse to do?

Why it works: Anyone experienced has a list. No list means no judgement — or a willingness to buy upvotes when the results are slow.

Questions buyers actually ask

What does a Reddit marketing agency actually deliver?

Research, participation, monitoring and reporting. Concretely: the list of buying questions your market asks, the map of subreddits and threads that decide those questions, real posts and comments written by someone who understands your product, monitoring of every mention of your brand and category, and a monthly report showing your mention rate and share of voice inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Reddit Ads are optional and managed for a flat fee.

How much does Reddit marketing cost?

Our programmes run from $1,900 to $5,000 a month, month-to-month, with no minimum term. Price is driven by how many communities are in scope, how much participation happens each month, whether Reddit Ads are managed, and how deep the reporting goes. Across the wider market, quoted retainers cluster between $2,000 and $5,000 a month, with full-service programmes running higher.

Is this against Reddit’s rules — will our accounts get banned?

Not if it is done properly. Reddit’s Rule 2 asks you to abide by community rules and participate authentically; it sets no site-wide self-promotion ratio, no karma floor and no account-age minimum — those are decided subreddit by subreddit, which is why a tactic that is fine in one community gets you removed from the next. What does breach site-wide policy is content manipulation: bought upvotes, purchased or rented accounts, and ban evasion. We do none of those, and our full policy is published above.

Do you use fake accounts, bought upvotes or anonymous seeding?

No. No bots, no purchased upvotes, no purchased accounts, and no undisclosed astroturfing. We post from real, aged accounts belonging to real people who say who they work for. If a vendor offers you guaranteed upvotes or a fixed number of positive comments, they are selling you a site-wide ban with a delay on it.

What accounts will you post from, and who owns them?

A mix: accounts belonging to your own team, which you keep, and accounts belonging to our contributors, who disclose the client relationship when they mention you. You own every piece of research, every subreddit map, every prompt set and every report. If we stop working together, you keep all of it.

Our posts keep getting removed by moderators. What are we doing wrong?

Usually one of four things: that specific subreddit has a self-promotion rule you have not read, your account is too new or too low-karma for its automod thresholds, you posted a link where the community only allows text, or you did not disclose your affiliation. The self-check above will tell you which. Fixing it is mostly patience — genuine contribution for a few weeks changes how both the community and its filters read your account.

How long until we see results?

First signals in 4 to 8 weeks — threads answered, mentions appearing, early movement in citation tracking. Compounding by month 3 to 6, as threads accumulate, start ranking in Google, and get picked up by AI engines. Reddit Ads produce traffic faster, within days, but reliable cost-per-acquisition still takes 4 to 8 weeks of optimisation.

How is this different from a PR or content agency that also “does Reddit”?

A content agency writes on your website and hopes it gets found. We work where the answer is actually assembled. Across the 150 buying questions we tracked, 15.6% of what the engines cited came from vendor and agency websites — about one citation in seven — while 55.8% came from other people’s articles and lists and 11.3% straight from Reddit threads. A generalist will write you a good page. That page is competing for one seventh of the answer.

Will this help us get recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews?

That is the point of the work, and it is the thing we measure. Reddit is the largest single source these engines quote in our category, and Google AI Overviews are decided almost entirely off your own website — by Reddit threads, third-party lists and directories. We report your mention rate and share of voice on each engine every month, so you can see it move rather than take our word for it.

What share of the work is organic versus Reddit Ads?

Most clients start fully organic, because that is what earns citations, and add ads later for reach or for a launch. Where both run, a typical split is around 70% organic participation to 30% paid. Ads are managed for a flat monthly fee — we never take a percentage of your ad spend, so we have no reason to push you to spend more.

What is the minimum commitment, and what do we keep if we stop?

There is no minimum. We work month-to-month and you can stop at the end of any month. You keep the prompt set, the subreddit map, the thread research, every report, and your own accounts. Reddit rewards consistency, so we will tell you honestly if we think three months is too short to be worth your money — but we will not lock you in to prove it.

Does Reddit work for B2B SaaS, DTC or regulated industries?

B2B SaaS and DTC, consistently — r/SaaS, r/b2bmarketing and the vertical communities are where buyers compare tools in public, and those threads rank. Regulated categories such as fintech and healthcare work too, but slowly and with tighter guardrails: no claims, no testimonials, careful disclosure. If your category has no active community, we will tell you that in the audit rather than sell you a programme.

See where you stand before you talk to us

The audit takes 30 minutes and produces the same thing you have been reading: the questions your buyers ask, who the engines currently recommend instead of you, and the threads deciding it. Free, and yours whether or not you hire us.
